I can't think of a good reason why I need a personal web site, or anything I need to share with the world, or any use that this site serves except for my own amusement and education. But so what? It's not a great leap to see html documents replacing nearly everything that's now printed or sent over networks or faxed or borrowed from the library or sent through the mail or looked up in an out-of-date directory you keep on the shelf. I think that a shift like that may cause greater changes to the way we work than all of those more spectacular aspects of the Internet that get it on the covers of the trend-spotting weekly news magazines (things like multimedia, on-line selling, pornography, and insane IPOs). So, I'm messing around with this web site mostly to figure out how it works, because I think it's going to be useful to know how to do it.
