We’re breaking new ground this year. We’ve never written a Christmas letter before. Realizing that we don’t have enough time to hand-write Christmas cards, we narrowed our options down to sending a Christmas letter or Mother’s Day cards. Having enjoyed the letters we’ve received from you all in recent years, we decided to boot up the word processor and join the crowd.

Both of us are working, sometimes too much. Sue, still at Ernst & Young, accepted a one-year assignment to coach E&Y project teams on project management. That puts her in a different city every couple of days, which means that the only things more astonishing than our phone bills are Sue’s frequent-flyer statements. She’ll be back to her regular job (management consulting in insurance) next summer.

Doug’s now in charge of Engineering Analysis in the research division of the Torrington Company. In the last year he’s become much more of a manager than an engineering analyst. As his thinking becomes fuzzier, he talks a lot about process and strategy and complains that he no longer "gets" Dilbert.

Outside of the office, we still spend most of our time outside, doing one of two things depending upon how cold it is: we bike, or we ski.

We sandwiched a ski vacation at Whistler, BC last February between an early December weekend at Vail and a spring skiing trip to Breckenridge–both on the tail end of business trips to Colorado. Already this year, the snow gods have responded to our dances; we got in a day in Vermont at Thanksgiving, and a long weekend in the Rockies in December.

We did more of our bicycling off-road this year than ever before. A week above 10,000 feet in southwestern Colorado was rewarding, humbling, and inspiring. We came home obsessed with exploring the trails in west-central Connecticut–and we found some great places to play in our backyard!

Staying in touch is important to us, but moving around as much as we do makes it more difficult than we’d like. Drop us an e-mail message and we’ll be able to connect from the road. Also, when you have a minute, you might want to check out Doug’s web site just for fun.

That’s the news. We do hope you’re well. Have fun, Happy New Year!
